Aims & Scope

A platform for the integrative, multi-scale and translational research that the modern science of the brain demands.

The remit

The convergent science of the brain.

Neuroscience has outgrown the boundaries of any one field. Understanding the brain now demands the deliberate integration of molecular and cellular biology, computation, neuroimaging, emerging neurotechnology and clinical medicine.

JCNS exists for the work that lives between these levels — multi-scale, translational and methodologically convergent research.

Mission

Why convergent neuroscience

The last decades have transformed neuroscience from the study of the structure and function of the nervous system into a broad, multi-level and interdisciplinary domain. It now works in deep interaction with medicine, cognitive science, data science, artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering, emerging neurotechnologies, the behavioural, social and human sciences, and evidence-based policy.

The intrinsic complexity of the brain — and the need to connect molecular and cellular processes, neural circuits and networks, cognition, behaviour and human experience — requires approaches that move beyond the boundaries of traditional disciplines toward integrative, convergent models of research.

Despite remarkable growth in specialised journals across the subfields of neuroscience, there remains a substantial need for a venue that systematically covers research built on the convergence of methods, the integration of levels of analysis, the link between basic and clinical science, and the interaction between new technologies and the biology of the brain. The Journal of Convergent Neuroscience Studies exists to meet that need.

Scope

What we publish

JCNS is a home for original research, systematic reviews, methodological studies and innovative scientific perspectives. Our scope spans — and deliberately connects — the following domains:

  • Molecular & cellular neuroscience — genes, proteins, synapses and single-cell biology.
  • Systems & cognitive neuroscience — circuits, networks, perception, memory, emotion and behaviour.
  • Computational neuroscience — modelling, theory and complex-data analysis.
  • Neuroimaging — structural, functional and multimodal imaging across scales.
  • Neurotechnology — brain–computer interfaces, stimulation and neural sensing.
  • Artificial intelligence in neuroscience — machine learning for discovery, decoding and precision.
  • Precision medicine, clinical neuroscience & brain health — biotypes, translation and care.
  • Neuroscience & society — the human, social, cultural and ethical dimensions of brain science.
Our editorial test

We prioritise studies in which findings at one level of analysis interpret findings at another — multi-scale, translational and methodologically convergent — over parallel datasets reported side by side.

Objectives

What the journal sets out to do

  • Provide a scientific platform for innovative, interdisciplinary neuroscience research.
  • Strengthen the synergy between basic science, clinical research, emerging technologies and translational application.
  • Support studies using multimodal approaches, complex-data analysis, AI and advanced methods of studying the brain.
  • Foster scientific exchange among researchers in neuroscience, medicine, engineering, cognitive science and the social and human sciences.
  • Advance the international standing of regional neuroscience and develop national and transnational collaboration.
Ethics & standards

Publication ethics & editorial standards

JCNS is committed to the highest standards of research integrity. Editorial policy, peer review, authorship, conflict-of-interest disclosure and handling of misconduct follow internationally recognised guidance (COPE principles).

Peer review

All research undergoes rigorous, constructive peer review by domain experts, coordinated by an editor with subject depth. Reviews are confidential and assess novelty, methodological rigour and — for JCNS — the strength of convergence across levels.

Open access & licensing

Articles are published open access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0) licence, so authors retain copyright and readers everywhere may access and build on the work.

Research integrity

We require ethical approval for human and animal research, transparent reporting, data-availability statements and adherence to relevant reporting guidelines.

Indexing & publisher

Indexing & publisher

The journal is developed with international indexing as a core objective, following the quality, ethics and regularity-of-publication criteria required by major scientific databases.

JCNS is published by the Department of Neuroscience, Addiction & Neuroimaging, School of Advanced Technologies in Medicine, Tehran University of Medical Sciences.

Bring us the work between the levels.
